Lagu “Last Night on Earth” merupakan salah satu balada paling emosional dari album konsep 21st Century Breakdown (2009). Berbeda dengan nuansa punk rock yang agresif, lagu ini menonjolkan pengaruh piano-rock klasik tahun 50-an dengan sentuhan romantis yang kental.
Billie Joe Armstrong menulis lagu ini sebagai surat cinta yang tulus untuk istrinya, Adrienne. Dalam narasi albumnya, lagu ini menggambarkan momen keintiman antara karakter Christian dan Gloria di tengah kekacauan dunia.
